Lauren Hudson

Advancing Afterschool Fellow

Hello! My name is Lauren, and I am the Advancing Afterschool Fellow for the Afterschool Network. I grew up in Northern California and went to college at the University of the Pacific, School of International Studies where I majored in International Relations, and minored in Anthropology, Economics, and Political Science. During my undergrad, I worked and interned at a variety of organizations, including Girl Scouts Heart of Central California summer camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the American Center in Prague, Czech Republic where I traveled to schools in Prague to increase youth participation at our community events. While in California, I was a frequent volunteer, namely at the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen in Sacramento. After finishing my degree, I moved to Nevada, working full-time at the non-profit study abroad organization I studied with during college, and then later advised approximately 700 college students abroad (mostly in Italy!) as a Program Advisor.

I grew up attending afterschool care almost every weekday until I started high school, which is what drew me to want to work for the Alaska Afterschool Network. Looking back, I understand how quality afterschool programs influenced my life and how they can positively influence others. While my parents worked full-time, they could rely on the afterschool programs I attended to provide a safe place for me to go. There, I created friendships, attended homework club where I could get help when I needed it, and spent time playing outside.

As I start this fellowship position, I am looking forward to working within the Alaska Afterschool Network, excited to meet new people, and get involved with the community.
