Reflections from an AmeriCorps STEM VISTA with the Alaska Afterschool Network
I moved to Alaska for a year of service as an AmeriCorps STEM VISTA, hoping to better understand the impact of afterschool programs on youth and families. During that time, I had the chance to see what happens behind the scenes, how much thought, care, and effort go into creating enriching opportunities for kids beyond the school day. I helped build STEM lessons, supported sites in implementing them, and observed programs to offer insights into what was working well and where improvements could be made. My goal was to help shape meaningful learning experiences that foster curiosity and exploration.
“Through it all, I came to see how vital afterschool programs are, not just for academic support, but for nurturing connection and creativity in young minds. ”
Through it all, I came to see how vital afterschool programs are, not just for academic support, but for nurturing connection and creativity in young minds.
One of the most fulfilling parts of my role was co-hosting a STEM Community of Practice alongside Lily Tegner. These moments of collaboration reminded me how essential joy and connection are in both work and life, something that’s easy to lose sight of under the weight of adult responsibilities. Being part of this network affirmed for me that creating space for play, inquiry, and community is critical, not only for young people, but also for those who support them.
I’m grateful to have been part of this movement and to carry forward the lessons it taught me about purpose, presence, and the power of learning together.
